But why was the question asked? When I was being mentored in my occupation, I was told repeatedly to ask three questions;
1) to what end?
2) For what purpose?
3) by what method?
Three little questions consisting of nine words and the whole world opens up. Why do we do the things we do and why do we work so hard at making sure that we need and use a level?
It is in fact one of the working tools of the Freemason. It is a physical tool that verifies that structure is horizontal to the earth’s horizon. Horizontal is a fact of the nature. Water itself is always horizontal to the Earth. It is when we get to the discussion of the Universe that we realize that the Horizon is only relative at a certain point in place on the Earth, but the Horizon is always visible no matter where you stand. Any structure built not level with the Earth is not in balance with the Earth and thus inherently weaker than a level structure and suspect to forces and pressures applied on it in the future.
From the Masonicdictionary.com comes:
In Latin libra was a balance, the root of our libration, equilibrium; libella was the diminutive form of the same word, and from it has come our level, an instrument by which a balance is proved, or by which may be detected the horizontal plane. It is closely associated in use with the plumb, by which a line perpendicular to the horizontal is proved. The level is that on which there are no inequalities, hence in Masonry it is correctly used’ as a symbol of equality. “We meet upon the level” because Masonic rights, duties, and privileges are the same for all members with-out distinction.
From a speculative or Masonic viewpoint, it reflects on the equality of each Brother or that the balance of equality is placed on all Brothers. We are all equal and we all meet on the same plane with no weakness from a caste system. Wealth, income or any other man made separations of are not visible or not to be even known within our Institution. It is what lies within the individual, not clothing or wealth that makes a Freemason.
The website americanidoms.net states it means “honest”. Thus, as role models of our community, our essence of equality and honesty are well documented and are always on display as a way of life for the betterment of humanity. Thus we continue to use the working tools of the Builders and those tools are being used to build upon the essence of goodness.
Thus we go back to those three questions and the answers are right in front of us. We are to be role models for all facets of our society, ensuring that we are maintaining equality in our Brotherhood using all of our working tools and by the understanding, knowledge and wisdom of our teachings, we promote goodness.
